. . . . . . 2009 Season . . . . . .
The Yorkshire Playhouse is pleased to announce its 2009 season...
WINTER PLAY : Quiet on the Set by Terrell Anthony
– Directed by Karla Ott
February 19-22 & February 26-March 1
Synopsis: This satire of TV soaps takes place on Sound Stage Three of Sunset, a long-running show, and focuses on the off-camera lives of the characters. It genially skewers the cliched situations, characters and dialogue of a typical TV daytime drama. There are two newcomers to the cast - Tamara, who is returning after a two-year absence to play Bridget, and Taylor, a serious actor and film star who is making his TV daytime drama debut as John. Tamara and Taylor are brother and sister in real life. Also on hand are Judith, Taylor's embittered ex-girl friend who plays Barbara, and Bruce, an airhead whose major concern - apart from remembering his lines - is making sure his hair looks good. In one scene he jots his lines down on his hands - only to become hopelessly befuddled when his hands begin to sweat under the lights! Also in the cast is one actor who plays several different roles - from the director to the makeup man, to the wardrobe lady, and on and on in a demanding series of comic cameos.
"Even if you don't watch daytime television, Quiet on the Set can provide an evening of fun."
SPRING PLAY : The Haunting of Hill House by F. Andrew Leslie
– Directed by John I Baker, III
April 30-May 3 & May 7-10
Synopsis: Cut off from the outside world by its remote location and shunned by all who know its forbidding and sinister reputation, Hill House has remained empty and silent except for the daily visits of its grumbling caretaker, Mrs. Dudley. Its isolation is broken by the arrival of Dr. Montague, an investigator of supernatural phenomena who has been granted a short lease by the present owner. His mission is to delve into the morbid history of the house and to come to grips with the occult forces that have made it uninhabitable for many years. He is joined by three others, all unacquainted, but all having their particular reasons for accepting Dr. Montague's invitation to share his Hill House sojourn. Their visit begins with jovial informality, but their sensibilities are soon jolted by strange and eerie occurrences. As they struggle to disguise their mounting fears they are joined by Dr. Montague's wife and a friend, who have come to Hill House for purposes of their own. They too are absorbed by the supernatural, but their approach is via direct communication with the departed spirits—a type of psychic research which is regarded fearfully by Dr. Montague and which, as subsequent events bear out, brings on a crisis in which the evil forces of Hill House are goaded to a new and, for one of those present, fatal fury.
SUMMER PLAY: The Nerd by Larry Shue
– Directed by Nick Parsons
August 6-9 & 13-16
Synopsis: Set in Terre Haute, Indiana in late 1979, The Nerd presents the story of Willum Cubbert, an unassuming young architect, friends Tansy and Axel and unexpected houseguest Rick. During the course of the play, we learn that Rick had saved Willum's life in Vietnam. Over the years, Willum and Rick had exchanged occasional letters and greeting cards, though they never met. Willum has promised Rick that he could come to him for help at any time. While Willum is hosting a dinner party for his boss, Rick shows up. His awkward manner and inappropriate behavior throw the occasion into shambles. Rick decides to move in. Eventually at his wit's end, Willum decides to take a chance on Axel's plan to get rid of Rick.
FALL PLAY – Melodrama: The Town that Hated Santa or Wait Til I Get My Claus on You by Mike O’Roark
– Directed by Lisa Rank
November 12-15 & 19-22
Synopsis: It’s Christmas time for the good citizens of Kringle, Kansas. Led by Rose Blossom, the favorite daughter of the town Mayor, everyone is all set to celebrate with glad tidings and good cheer. Unfortunately, the anti-Santanic Professor Quark is desperately trying to convince everyone of the scientific impossibility of Santa Claus. With the help of the Mayor’s less favorite daughter, the delightfully wicked April Blossom, the two set forth a plan to ostracize the town from the jolly old elf. Mystified by the towns sudden and unexplained change of heart, Santa dispatches his top elf and chief lieutenant, Elvin Kind, to sort things out. Events begin to spiral out of control which, ultimately, lead to the big man himself, making a timely appearance.
