“The New Kid on the Block” Review

Comedy and confusion are the words to remember in The New Kid on the Block.  In a classic comedy of errors, the characters learn just how exhausting and complicated keeping a secret can become. The show is set in the early 2000’s in a house rented by Lloyd, Parker, and Carl, three senior citizens struggling to pay the rent after their other roomer has passed. When their new lodger arrives, they are shocked to find that “Will” is not a man, but a woman! Hemmed in by rumors, nosy neighbors, unexpected relatives, and their own web of lies and excuses, the characters soon find themselves in a clueless mess of miscommunication. Everyone has a hidden truth to be revealed in the final scene.  With crazy characters and a plot that will leave your head spinning, The New Kid on the Block is something you won’t want to miss. The show is appropriate for all ages, but I think older adults will find it funnier than younger audiences in regards to the events and jokes in the play.

The Yorkshire Playhouse has a great track record for comedy and this production is another example of the kind of show this ensemble of actors is known for. The performance features a wide spectrum of characters, from neighborhood gossip Morgana to sunny, optimistic Will, to eccentric, comic Lloyd. All of the roles in the show are expertly played.

The performance also exhibits some interesting costumes, such as loud floral dresses, camo suits, and flowing black cloaks. If you’re in the mood for a light-hearted comedy, The New Kid on the Block is the perfect entertainment for your evening.

Although COVID has altered many events this year, it’s great that the Yorkshire Playhouse can continue to come together to give joy and laughter to the community, and we as audiences can continue to support live theater.

The production opens on April 13 and continues through the 18th. COVID regulations will still be enforced for this show. Masks will be worn by all cast members, and in-person audiences will be limited. You can purchase virtual and in-person tickets on the Yorkshire Playhouse website.
